Markets in Menorca provide the ideal place to purchase some original Menorcan
products, and it's certainly worth noting that the Ciutadella markets were first
established way back in 1301 by Jaime II as part of the Christian conquest of
the island.
In these picturesque, colourful and multi-ethnologic places you'll find nearly
everything, from basic food produce to the ultimate fashion trend, all in a
familiar relaxed atmosphere.
Most winter markets on the island are held in the morning, and summer ones in
the evening, but whenever you visit you'll need to get there early and be
prepared to haggle like a professional to secure the best bargains.
A couple of words of advice, do not start to negotiate if you have no intention
of buying, but do not be afraid to say no and walk away if the prices do not
fall to a level that you are prepared to pay for an item. Common sense we know,
but still easy to forget.
Open air markets are held at the Plaza del Mercat in nearby Ciutadella every
Saturday from 7:00 am till 1:00 pm offering a selection of locally produced
fruit, vegetables and crafts along with a selection of other Menorcan products
including flowers and clothes etc. Also from Tuesday to Saturday, this is the
location of the fish market which is held from 7:00 am till 2:00 pm.
A further market is also held in Ciutadella on the Plaza de Es Born every Friday
and Saturday from around 8:00 am to 2:30 pm.
From June to September each year, a craft market is also held every Friday,
Saturday and Sunday evening from 17:00 hours until midnight at the Carrer de
Pere Capllonc on the steps leading down to the harbour (Baixada de Capllonc),
selling a variety of handcrafted jewellery and gifts etc.
Also during the summer months, with the increased numbers of visitors to the
island, the Firac street market is held along the Portal de la Mar on Ciutadella
harbour front every Monday to Saturday from 20.00 hours until midnight.
A further flea market is also held on the Placa de la Catedral every Monday
evening during August and September, from around 19.00 hours until midnight,
offering for sale a selection of locally made artisan crafts.
