Santa Ponsa is famous throughout the island for hosting two big Fiestas every
year. The first is called the Rocio, and this is a five day Andalucian Religious
Festival, which is held during the first weekend in June each year. In keeping
with most religious festivals in Mallorca these days, it becomes a long weekend
of food, drink and music, along with a little bit of praying! The Rocio does
attract a large number of people to the town each year, and there is always a
great selection of side shows and stalls. |

Fiesta of King James has now grown into a two week celebration that
usually starts around the 1st of September, to commemorate the landing
and conquering of Mallorca by Jaime I in 1229. He and his troops landed
at Santa Ponsa, and today the spot is marked by a stone cross on the
southern headland not far from the nautical club. The fiesta ends on the
second weekend of the month with a grand procession through the streets,
followed by a mock battle between the Moors and Christians on the beach
on the Saturday. That night there is then a rock concert from 9pm until
4am, which has in the past attracted many top international acts. The
whole fiesta ends with a grand fireworks display at midnight on the
Sunday, the likes of which you've never seen before. |
